DENTAL DINNER
Dental Dinner, haven't really given it a second thought until this semester (since it is this semester). As much as I want to go (kinda ambivalent), I would much rather go for a nice dinner at ARIA which is a place on eagle street. should be fun and cheaper hahaha

Hiatus
It has been over a month since I last blogged and that is due to the holidays :). This year's holidays were especially fun because of the ADSA Convention to Sydney. It was the highlight of the holidays because not only was it a lot of fun but it got me remotivated in doing dentistry, all the challenges that I'll face, the people I'll meet, opportunities which I will be given and all the organisations which I will interact with.
It has given me a different perspective of dentistry, more than just a job, its becoming a life choice which I will be very happy with! I would have to say the most surprising thing about the lectures was that I found out how much I might enjoy working with kids! I'm not sure exactly where it will go but it looks like building a rapport with the kids is much more rewarding and fun than building a rapport with the parents :P.
One thing that i'll remember for some time is how the paediatric dentist taught us a little trick he uses to get the kids completely comfortable in the chair. At the first appointment he'll tell the child to press their nose which makes the chair go down. When the child stops pressing their nose then you know they are comfortable! This makes them sit in the chair much more easily and you build a positive experience for the next time!
Aside from the dental convention, I had a couple of dinner, friends over a few times and unfortunately no throwing chun in the pool, as much fun as that would have been :P. People are really busy nowadays perhaps its time to boycott the every 2/3 week party. Summer will be much more fun as it always is :).
This semester I have a few things planned. I will work towards getting a DA job which means getting references from a few of the tutors, I have 3 in mind so that should be alright. Then I have to apply for some jobs again...there are so few though I hope I can get one.
In the mean time I'm going to learn DENT3062 according to the booklets as well as Perio(not completely sure about course code). I think I'll try to learn chinese better from the internet :) seems like a good way to learn it especially since my internet has been upgraded to 25gb and it costs the same how dodgy is telstra not telling use about free upgrades?
Last friday was sports day and instead of going to play sports, we decided to go watch batman dark knight rises. paid $5.50 and saw it in Brisbane's equivalent to IMAX, so a bigger screen. I enjoyed the movie while I watched it but coming out of the theatre I don't really remember much of the movie ;p I remembered I wanted The Bat! Went to ben's place and chilled there for a bit before going to Ahmets because I've wanted to try it. The drink and dinner were quite nice but a little bit pricey at 28 dollars.
Last weekend I read through lots of the ADA stuff, did my CPR course and did my washing/ironing. Seems like an alright weekend!
So it all starts this week! LETS GO

Fences
Today I went for a walk because I hadn't been out for a while. Whiles walking around, I noticed that half the houses don't actually have gates and of those half of those don't even have a proper fence...a low stone wall doesn't count (50cm off the ground who are you going to stop? gnomes from escaping?). I just walked until the end of the bike track and made my way back on the road until i saw a bus. I then walked around some more and got a golden gay time. delicious :) I also saw a cafe which seems to sell cheap sandiwches about 3 bucks a sanwich, best price i'm gonna get anywhere nearby so i will try it sometime soon.
This random walk reminds me of a time in first year when i got hopelessly lost because I had caught the wrong bus (think walking 40 minutes to get home when it would take 40 minutes to walk home from uni). There were so many nice people I met along the way from the random lady who offered me help byb finding directions on her smart phone to the other random people who would ask if i was lost while i was walking by (i didn't realise it was that obvious...either that or no one walks around where they live hahaha). I got back feeling really refreshed! It was a similar feeling when I got back from ym 45 minute walk as well hahahaha might have been the ice cream and lipton ice tea talking though :P I also know where to get toileteries now if i ever need 1 bar of soap instead of woolworth's 4 bars of soap. at a dollar a bar of soap its an alright price!
Almost finished reading the relevant parts of the textbook and have to go over my notes again (learn all the things which I had written down to learn from the textbook which were in the past exam that i had no idea about). If all goes well I should be alright!
Jennifer texted me today telling me she made prefect. Good on her...except I don't know what being prefect does for you haha.

Almost finished my notes
So from ther 34 lectures i'm up to lecture number 29 yay! should be able to finish it today I think. The renal lecture were so hard to get through wow I was surprised at them...no wonder i fell asleep in class there is too much information that he stressed. Luckily the fourth lecture was already pretty much covered in the last 3 and the pharmacology one was pretty much the same as arugarumamd's lecture.
It was quite difficult to start making all the notes (made about half of them before midsem) becasue its been such miserable weather and reading my notes is hard enough without having to type them up as well...
I have barely left the house since holidays started perhaps I will go for a jog or something sometime or other...how vague is that!
It been quite cold so I've bene wearing 2 jumpers and socks;p not up to the stage where I need 2 jumpers and a jacket with 2 pairs of pants and socks while under a blanket with the heater on hahaha lets hope it doens't come to that!
So the plan for the next 12 days before the exam is to go through past papers and then read the textbook before making a final summary of the notes I've made. Not looking forward to going over 30+ pages (at 30 right now).
I heard it was really cold and the winds were insane in sydney! hope everyone is well!

End of Semester
The semester ended with 2 lectures which were quite boring to be honest. I came home and started cleaning my room in preparation for the study that will be coming! Firstly get rid of everything which isn't DENT2052 which is most things on the table due to case analysis.
This week has been raining and it is going to continue into the weekend which is fine because I am in no rush to do my washing anyway.
Yesterday I went to clinic and assisted a chris, sonya and elaine (another elaine) and it turns out she lives about 2 minutes walk from me! excellent ;p she's repeating third year so we have something in common hahaha
Winter is here and I have to wear jackets and jumpers, its troublesome but nowhere near as bad as sydney I guess. It doesn't feel like end of sesmeter, I only realised it was so close a couple of days ago when Dayea said 'cya next semester'. I was like what OH RIGHT, its last week and we have different finals to sit thus next sem.
Anyway I've been so lax with my blog posting because it is representattive of how interesting the year has been so far. half a year flew so fast! so much faster than last year hahahahaha, not too worried about assessments this year which is always awesome!

Spontaneity
Lets start from yesterday, had to wake up early to get to the lecture. After the lectures I went to the dental school to have a chat to a course co ordinator but found out today she's on sick leave until the 8th of june so can't talk to her about the misplacement of my preclinic mark but she said that I can just get it remarked and not have to do another exam so I think it will be alright.
There was a spontaneous dinner that elaine wanted before the end of sem. It was raining though so i think that's why elaine didn't end up showing up hahaha. so we had a nice dinner and dessert at jojo's.
i downloaded and won diablo...not that hard actually, now i'm satisfied :D
did my washing today :D, it was quite cold but luckily it all dried!
studying case analysis.

Thursdays really are the highlight of the week!
Ever since I've started assisting, thursdays have turned from being absolutely boring to the highlight of the week! Its the day which I feel I am proactively doing something :D. Today was good for a number of reasons which I'll go into shortly. I woke up initially not really wanting to get out of bed because it was quite cloudy but surprisingly warm. I convinced myself to get up and I'm glad I did.
I got to the dental school ready to assist when lo and behold there are about 5 people free for the first hour so Dr Smith (mostly in her group) decides to give a couple of demonstrations instead of letting everyone just stand around. So the first thing she needs is a volunteer but she can't use a chair which is going to be used soon after so we go into the back room. I am picked as the volunteer and realise how important local anaesthetic is in dental treatment!
The first thing she did was demonstrate how to insert ginigval retraction cord because she has seen lots of people doing it wrong so she inserts it and it is quite uncomfortable but oh well, I survive. Next she shows how to do shade guides properly and she puts some composite on the tooth to demonstrate that you can show the patient what it will look like with a sort of roughly done composite veneer on the surface of the tooth -something you don't learn in preclinic. The was absolutely painless.
The lsat thing she did was demonstrate how to put on a rubber dam using a wingless clamp. That was quite painful because my second molar didn't have much of an undercut so she put it subginigvally...ouch. She also flossed so that the ligatures went subginigival...all the while I had a mirror so I could see what was causing my pain as well as feeling it. I did learn through that experience though :D
The second part of clinic was quite fun because I learnt how to position the suction better...even though the rubber dam kept making horrendous noises. The patient also complimented our teamwork (sonya and I) which is always nice!
After that I left because I had to go to lunch with Ben and Helen at Sunnybank. We firstly went to get a drink at a cafe. It was really nice! While we were in there we saw a mobile prosthetist van! Haha only dental students can derive fun from something like that!
We then went for ramen and it was as good as i remembered :D We couldn't have any dessert because we were running short on time but we were quite full anyway...i think i fell asleep on the bus, Luckily i got off where i needed to.
The last thing we I helped aunty susan work out how to use google for about 2 hours while she did some computer exercises, in that time i was helping i watched masterchef and glee! two shows I have been neglecting. It was the final episode for the season for glee and masterchef isn't as exciting as it is in alter episodes but nonetheless, it helps you build a rapport with the contestants so i suppose that is alright. The first person to beat a celebrity chef will become the favourite!!
So today was a good day and I'm going to end it on a high note :D good night!
